What I miss...

dVerse Poets Pub

Already -

I go barefoot in a downpour
      so don't miss that -
Once I knew how to catch a wave -
ride it in
and how I'd like to dive into a warm pile of
cotton sheets again, softened by 100 years
of washing -
 dried in bright sunshine

I miss playing baseball -  in an empty field,
with boys
ringing doorbells on May Day with
my friend, Laura -
I used to love to skip
in a meadow green - picking it's daisies,
play make believe,
and, without caution,
leap on my horse - and ride away

I miss the tickle  of
my Grandpa's whiskers,
Mom's cool hands on my forehead,
    feeling for a temp
I miss being gloriously serenaded
by my two vying male
yellow canaries - Carlos,  Ricky,
changing diapers, babies laughing

I miss falling in love,
wearing a dusty pink lace veil
with satin trim o'er my brow -
Perhaps someday I will again,
with someone I've yet
to meet -
someone who will dance me 'round the
dance floor all night long,
strong arm guiding\my lower back -
     I miss my youth..
             ..I would say

Yet another 25 years is a whole lifetime, isn't it?  We are writing about "missing something" today at dversepoets.com hard for me to decide on just one thing..nothing 'profound' here ;)

  2. Ah, yes...I empathize with missing one's youth. And yes, ringing doorbells on May Day. I wonder if kids even pay much attention to May Day anymore.

  3. Though I've never heard your voice or anyone recite this, I hear this piece when I read it. Nice pauses and breaks along with the images. So many golden moments. Makes me miss my youth. Well done!

  4. Very lovely images. Beautiful poem. My favourites the two yellow canaries Carlos and Ricky LOL and jumping into piles of washing.I was inspired to try that this afternoon but unfortunately I would probably break every bone in my body:)

  7. Our house is suddenly fill with 20 year olds as my son and his friends return from university and start to find work and a career. From our lofty age of nearly 60 we have to admire and smile at what they do and think as trials!

  10. Well, I hope you get some dancing in, even today! A very sweet poem. I especially liked the sheets - there is kind of a stiffness, yet softness, yet damp cool, yet dry freshness to sheets like that - I could really picture them as I read. k.

  11. Awww... I smiled at reading how your miss your grandpa's whiskers tickle.
So many things to reminisce over here. I hope you still dance, even if it's only in your living room sometimes :)

  16. what do you mean 'nothing profound'!? you miss the richness of your past life, that made who you are. simple words but a deeply profound story behind them. I also miss falling in love (but this time I want to be really loved too).. this is our second Christmas, I'm happy our lives met :) xxo
