It's time for the Monday Haibun -                                                 dversepoets.com

Your image emerges from tufted white clouds as I paint the surrounding sky. Your portrait, within a rainbow's full arc, today I paint through teary eyes. I had not yet planned to make that particular small journey yesterday, but I'm glad I took the turn that led me north instead of south after I left you. Otherwise, I would not have seen what I saw before me: the sky parted and a rainbow appeared.

I watched as you sank to a lying position and folded your paws into my hand. Your eyes were open while I sang our favorite song to you; you purred just like you always do. I petted your pretty head and rubbed your ears between my fingers with my other hand. I told you we would be going home soon and pick up where we left off, watching the birds and other small animals. Because I knew you were tired and weary, I said things I knew you loved to hear.

                                                                                                                                                      Katie

You are permanently etched into my heart, with me wherever I go. I know you understood how much I loved you, how much you meant to me. But it stuns me to realize how true was your love and all that I meant to you. I did not deserve the altruistic devotion you showed me, living only to please me, and it has been my unraveling. As you closed your eyes, I remembered the day I found you, decided to adopt and care for you. Through everything, you were by my side or on my lap, comforting me.

 Loyal companion,
gift to my wandering soul -
rest in peace, my friend

  3. So sorry to hear of your loss - so painful. That image of you sharing all of Katie's favourite things with her is particularly touching. I have a loyal, devoted companion like that - my first cat - and I can't imagine what it will be like if and when I lose her.

    1. Thanks, Marina, I hope you have a long time with your devoted companion. I'm not good for much today but will write and post a proper haibun to Bjorn's Van Gogh painting soon.

  4. This is heart breaking, and I think it would fit perfectly to the van Gogh... there are so much to draw from an image.:

This could be exactly drawn from the image...

Then of course you are welcome to do a second poem... I also reflect on how Toni just experienced the same devastating blow... I grew up with cats, and the end always came too soon.

  7. Dang, Kathy--this really got to me...tears. I like to think that that rainbow bridge is not just a sweet idea, but a reality. For me, all my dogs that have gone before me are still a part of me. Perhaps are well-loved pets are given to us to teach us to believe. I'm sorry for your pain.

  15. So sorry for your loss. It took me three years to find the courage after my two cats passed, to rescue my Bette...the unconditional love they give us IS comforting. Such a beautiful tribute. Love the image of the sky separating and a rainbow appears.

  16. I'm very sorry for your loss, Kathy. What a most meaningful and touching tribute you pay your dear friend. You can clearly feel the love and tenderness that you had between the two of you. Just this week I posted a poem that I had written about our cat that we lost not yet a year ago. I had started it soon after he died but couldn't seem to finish it until this week. I wish you well, Kathy.
